Pueblo Community Information
The beautiful country along the banks of the Arkansas River
that is now known as Pueblo (after the Spanish word meaning"village"),
was campsite to Native Americans for thousands of years, until
1842. It was then that the trading center Fort Pueblo was
established. As gold was discovered in Colorado, Fort Pueblo
became an important stop for miners, and eventually became
an industrial center for smelters to process raw ore into
precious metals and steel. This industry created jobs, for
which people came from across the country to fill. Pueblo
became a city in 1870 and is made up of four separate towns:
Pueblo, South Pueblo, Central Pueblo and Bessemer.
Today, Pueblo is a bustling city of 103,400 people. The city
maintains 110 parks, four municipal swimming pools, 2 golf
courses, and 22 miles of bicyling/walking trails along the
Arkansas and Fountain Rivers. Pueblo is also home to Colorado
State University - Pueblo.

Pueblo Facts
The City of Pueblo is also known as "America's Home
of Heroes", as was proclaimed by the City Council in
1993. Pueblo is the only city in America to be hometown to
four living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor
- Drew D. Dix, Raymond G. Murphy, William J. Crawford, and
Carl L. Sitter. The Medal of Honor is the highest military
award that can be bestowed upon a member of the United States
Armed Forces. President Dwight D. Eisenhower upon presenting
Raymond G. "Jerry" Murphy with his Medal in 1953
commented, "What is it...something in the water out there
in Pueblo? All you guys turn out to be heroes!".
Pueblo was formerly one of the largest steel-producing cities
in the United States and is still home to Rocky
Mountain Steel Mills. It is now home to a number of electronics
and aviation companies.
Damon Runyon was born in Pueblo where Runyon Field and Runyon
Lake are named after him. He was a third-generation newspaperman,
and started in the trade under his father in Pueblo. Runyon
moved to New York City in 1910 where he frequently contributed
sports poems to the New York American on boxing and
baseball themes, and also wrote numerous short stories and
essays. The musical Guys and Dolls and the
play Little Miss Marker grew from his short
stories.
